International Great Demonstration At Faslane
September 22, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
September 22: Jane Lewis writes… Many of us will be taking part in Nae Nukes Anywhere!, a celebration of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and the work of ICAN (the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) in bringing about the Treaty. We hope that lots of singers will come and join us and help to shine a light on this important work. If you have never been to Faslane this will be a fun, family-friendly event — we have plenty of new songs including a version of the can-can based on ICAN — I have made my tutu! I am told that to dance the can-can we need to wear tutus and stripy tights…
We have invited singers from other Campaign Choirs to come to Faslane to join in the mass sing on the Saturday, and are also planning to sing on Sunday 23rd in George Square in Glasgow to raise awareness of the UN Treaty to raise awareness of what the Ban means and why we need it. We will be encouraging folk to sign postcards to their MPs etc. It has been rumoured that Abba may make an appearance 😉 — the timing of this is to be confirmed but will be broadly ‘middle of the day’ e.g. 11–1pm or 12–2. We hope that many PiH singers can be there on the Sunday as well. I know many of us have friends in Glasgow so staying over may well be possible. There is also free crash accommodation at a church on the south side of the city
If you are not able to manage sleeping on floors — check AirBnB, Booking.com, or
https://www.visitscotland.com/destinations-maps/glasgow/accommodation/hostels/ for budget accommodation.
Depending on how many people from other Campaign Choirs are coming we are also planning an informal get-together and song-sharing evening on the Saturday night in Glasgow. Further details to be confirmed. It will be an opportunity to build relationships with singers from other choirs and to further develop relationships already forged at events such as Street Choirs.
More information about the rally, including international speakers and transport to Faslane can be found here: http://www.nuclearban.scot/sep-rally/
(PS I got the tutu fabric from the Cloth Shop on the junction of Pilrig St and Bonnington Road — they have a made-up tutu there so you can see how it is done — I really don’t want to be the only person wearing a tutu…!!)
